ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়ার সরাইলে হাইওয়ে পুলিশের ধাওয়া খেয়ে ট্রাকচাপায় তিন মোটরসাইকেল আরোহীর নিহত হওয়ার মর্মান্তিক ঘটনায় টহলরত পুলিশের বিরুদ্ধে লাঠি ছোড়ার অভিযোগ উঠেছে।
Police along the Sarail highway in Brahmanbaria have been accused of hurling a stick at a motorbike, causing an accident that led to the death of the three riders. The motorbike skidded and was hit by a truck, leading to the fatalities.
পুলিশ তা অস্বীকার করলেও তার গ্রহণযোগ্যতা প্রশ্নসাপেক্ষ। কয়েক মাস আগে ওই একই এলাকায় চলন্ত মোটরসাইকেলে হাইওয়ে পুলিশের লাঠি ছোড়ার আরেকটি ঘটনায় মোটরসাইকেলে আগুন ধরে যায় এবং তাতে চালক নিজেও দগ্ধ হন।
The police deny the accusations, but it was only a few months ago that a similar incident took place in which the police threw a stick at a motorbike, it caught fire and the rider was badly burnt.
আরও অভিযোগ পাওয়া গেছে যে ওই হাইওয়ে পুলিশ সংশ্লিষ্ট মহাসড়কের নিরাপত্তায় যত্নশীল নয় বরং সেখানে যানবাহন থামিয়ে ‘তোলা’ আদায়সংক্রান্ত তাদের বেআইনি তৎপরতা চালিয়ে থাকে।
The police in that locale are accused of being negligent and also of stopping vehicles to collect toll.
সোমবার সরাইলের ঘটনায় হেলমেটবিহীনভাবে তিনজনের মোটরসাইকেল আরোহণে নিশ্চয় অনিয়ম ঘটেছিল। তাই তাঁদের গতিরোধে সংকেত দিতে পুলিশের অধিকারও স্বীকৃত।
In the incident on Monday, the three bike riders were not wearing helmets and so the police had the right to stop them.
কিন্তু পুলিশ দাবি করেছে যে তাদের সংকেত পেয়ে মোটরসাইকেলটি গতি কমালে বেপরোয়া ট্রাকের চাপায় তাঁরা পিষ্ট হন।
But the police say the motorbike had slowed down and was hit by the truck.
বেলা সোয়া ১১টার দিকে সংঘটিত এ ঘটনার উল্লেখযোগ্যসংখ্যক প্রত্যক্ষদর্শী রয়েছেন। এবং প্রথম আলোর কাছে তাঁরা স্বীকারও করেছেন যে নিরপেক্ষ তদন্তকারীদের কাছে তাঁরা পুলিশের দৌড়ে ধাওয়া করা ও লাঠি ছোড়ার বিষয়ে মুখ খুলতে রাজি আছেন।
However, there were many eyewitnesses of the incident that took place at eleven in the morning, and they are ready to testify that the police chased the bike and hurled a stick at it.
এ অভিযোগ সত্য হলে সংশ্লিষ্ট পুলিশকে মারাত্মক ফৌজদারি অপরাধের দায়ে অভিযুক্ত হতে হবে।
If this proves, true, action must be taken against these policemen.
অপরদিকে এই ঘটনায় এটাও খতিয়ে দেখা দরকার যে হাইওয়ে পুলিশের যানবাহন সংকট বা অন্য কোনো ধরনের লজিস্টিকসের অভাব তাদের দৌড়ে ধাওয়া করতে ‘উৎসাহিত’ করে কি না।
